Hi

With the cover off you can both test the bearing and see if it has been replaced.

You can bodge the install of an IMS bearing pretty easily. Either by being rough with the IMS shaft and/or the bearing during removal/fitting.

You do not need to spend much money on a new bearing $10 or so will secure you a top quality original type.

Source for bearing? Burner’s blog specs the bearings pretty well, but it has to be perfect and robust. I would expect to pay 40-60 bucks for the bearing and still not be comfortable. Peace of mind made me buy from a source I can’t remember, but was several hundred dollars for a cylindrical ceramic. The stakes couldn’t be higher in this case.
As for the job, taking the bearing out will ruin it, but freezing the new and gently heating the engine case let’s the bearing drop right in. Just be gentle and it’s easy.

If it`s a dual row, you won`t be able to just replace it to another one because that size is not commercially available, I think never was. You can fit in a new one but you will need a spacer. Also, if it`s the original dual row I wouldn`t touch it. It`s a robust bearing that rarely fails.

This isn’t true. Might not be around anymore, might not be able to buy only one, but they were out there years ago when I searched. However...Not the way I went, not the way I would go. I think it’s sad that the suppliers are raping us on cost for parts, wont warranty it at the outrageous price, but if it’s that important to your piece of mind, give up the coin.
I would like to see pelican source a double row solution, rather then single row with spacer, but doubt that will happen. Their solution is fairly priced but becomes a maintenance item. As easy as pulling the tranny is, not a terrible compromise.

Well, last time I looked around to find a replacement for mine in the same exact size, I could not find it from any brand. It`s a special size manufactured for Porsche by NSK. It also has a groove for the spring clip that is not common on bearings, or at least not where it is on the outer ring. A bearing like this could only be used in the Porsche IMS, nowhere else. Maybe it was available in the past, but not anymore, or at least I couldn`t find it. I assume the one you remember of was the original NSK? As far as I know Porsche sells the entire IMS and not the bearing separately.
