It kinds like you have an AC Compressor clutch bearing that may be failing. The bad bearing could create a bigger drag (load) on your drive system. You may be better off replacing the entire compressor rather than just trying to do the clutch or clutch bearing. The bearing is not expensive but given the age of our vehicles, I am aAC compressor may not be far behind.
