What’s wrong with this picture?
Okay, for 15 points, can you spot the problem?

Is there a nut on that IMS center bolt? Wait... is there a bolt?
Edit: And it came from one of those silly cars that mounts the engine backwards (noticed tubing and harness).

Whatever it is, it also took the Oil Cooler!
It is not going to look pretty inside that motor.

Is that a dual row IMSB and it still failed? Maybe your cylinders won't be scuffed if that is what was making the knock.

No, it’s a single row.

We’ll see. There’s always room for optimism.

Well FWIW my IMSB looked similar. The only collateral damage to the engine was a timing chain paddle on the back of the engine, part of the oil pump and the IMS itself. The crank, rods, cylinders heads, etc were all good and reusable. I hope you are in the same boat. And my block is finally in transit back to my shop from LN with 3.6 Nickies installed..

Thank you Paul for adding a sparkle into this dreary prospect!

So the engine was running, but was knocking... Were the ball bearings still in the race? What does the oil filter look like? You may have dodged a bullet.

Yes, it’s odd that it ran. I only have the word of the guy who sold it. Not a lot of confidence. The bearing was completely destroyed. No race left. You can see the bolt at the wrong end of the tube. The oil filter had minimal debris in the pleats. I’m hoping to start the teardown tomorrow if I can get my garage above zero!

Well..... fwiw..... I've been a member here since March last year. In that time, lots of scares and paranoia..... but this is the first real live IMS bearing failure reported.
I'd call that relatively rare. ;-)

This is a 3.6 Carrera engine that I picked up cheap. My Porsche mechanic friend tells me that these engines are more susceptible to imsb failures than the 3.2s. I can’t verify the veracity of this but I’m looking forward to seeing what sort of collateral damage ensued!

Swing by a reputable shop like Jake Raby's or JFP on this forum and look at all the cars and engines waiting for IMS related rebuilds . Every time I swing by Jake's I just shake my head at the amount of dead Porsche's he has there waiting for repair and almost all are IMS related failures .

Which IMSB update is on your broken 3.2? Can you transfer it to the 3.6?
