You can lubricate the handbrake linkage. The top cover lifts off on the handbrake exposing the cable and spring assembly. My 97 was doing the same thing and I used water proof silicon spray and that took care of it. That was a year and half ago and no issues or re-occurrence.

I know this post is from a while ago but my 97 brake button is sticking from time to time. Can you describe what you mean by the "top cover"? I'm not sure what cover you're referring to. Thanks
