Top transmission gear replacement. Aftermarket non-plastic option.

Hi all,
On round 2 of replacing broken top transmission plastic gears. For the price of rolling the dice on a used unit off eBay, I could also replace with brass gears that I stumbled across. This seems way more reliable and not something I’d have to touch again most likely.

What’s the consensus on brass/steel aftermarket gears?

Ever wonder why Porsche chose to use Delrin gears instead of metal?

Yes I have lol! Posted this for that exact reason. I’m assuming by your response JFP and lack of replies that consensus is “bad idea”?

What’s interesting to me though, is that every other gear in the mechanism is metal. So why is that ONE gear plastic? Genuinely curious.

It is the planned failure point the gives out before the top motor ends up bending up other components, like the clamshell, when something gets bound up or jams.

As an engineer, you will always want to design in a sacrificial element as a safeguard. Something that will protect the integrity of the design if a failure occurs...and it always does. These gears serve that purpose. DO NOT go with metal gears.
