Headlight in oven 😲

My new headlight is supposed to be here tomorrow and, even though some pretty knowledgeable member have told me the oven story, it still was creeping me out. I was afraid to ruin a brand new headlight but here's a link to some instructions really good instructions i found on the manufacturer M-Ms web site. I feel more confident now.

I have two extra lights I am going to try this with.
However, I'm going cheap and not putting a lens inside.
I will use them without it there.

I have the Nine8Six projector headlight conversion from this thread in the DIY section. I was chicken to do it myself so I had it done. But in that thread are these instructions. See the section on baking the headlight in the oven. You want to put some wood in the over and put the headlight on the wood, not directly on the metal grates in the oven. (Even though you only want the lens).

I would attach those instructions here, but they are a pdf and I can't attach that through the photo upload feature.

225f for 15 minutes. Make sure no part of the headlight is touching anything metal in the oven (resting on wood blocks, as said above).

I put my headlights on a pizza pan with aluminum foil underneath.

I may end up switching the internals and using the new case, depends on the difficulty.

My pics are PDFs. You just have to "go advanced" when you edit your post.

I would go with Particlewave's 225 F for 15 minutes if I was doing it!

Ya I looked there. Just saw whole assembles. I wish they sold just the clear lens ☹

Thanks for the info tho.

I didn't have that kind of time, so I used the microwave.

For future reference, don't use the microwave.

microwave..., defrost cycle for 1:30min. sweet LOLL

I use/recycle the thick box, as in the same box the headlight came packaged into. I feed it a heat gun on its side (set to medium) for 20min lolll Just need some sort of reflector to make sure the heat don't blow directly on the headlight. Box is disposable, wife is happy'er

Our headlights don't necessarily need to be melted. 20~25dC warmer than ambient and they pretty much let go without a fight. Well, not a huge fight anyway (cat fight!!).

Glad to see you've sorted this out, ouch man :/

My response was to flouese. I took his question as meaning replacing the burnt inner lens, as in the first post. The main outer lens is not sold separately.

After doing 100+ sets of these, I've found that 225f for 15 minutes is the ideal temp/time.

No sense in screwing around with a heat gun. I've had too many people come crying to me about melting their main outer lens by using the "heat gun and cardboard box" method and wanting me to fix it.

100+ sets, fine if you have a dedicated oven in the corner of the garage. I'm less fortunate on that priviledge. Got caugt once-too-many-time with my own headlight in the kitchen oven ~ at the time (I know... wicked stuff loll). If you would have heard her scream I swear you'd think someone was murdered. My right side devil got so distured he told me to stop immediately loll

Charles - the reasonaing behind the Box idea and lower temp (ambiant +25dC) is to prevent deformation. Not that 225F will 'automatically' deform the bosch assembly, but some of us (cheap-boxes operators!) feel more comfortable staying within <50% of the softening point of polycarbonate (lense) and PP (hsng). When force is applied while the unit is really hot, the chances of deformation are greater. We just need the sealant to 'unstiff', nothing else.

^ The amateur technique mind you

Not a Pro, will never be. Love learning new tricks that's all. God bess those who are allowed to oven their headlights... 12~15min and boom|done (way too easy in fact).
