Since the above covers entire brand model lines it does not reflect our particular model concerns but it does show that Porsche does not have systemic issues with their motors, which is what you would expect.

I have my original IMS on my 01 S with 82k Miles, but I looked up the class action suit for VINs with likely IMS issues and mine is not in those batches and is also a Dual Row IMS which reduces the odds of failure even more.

I decided not to worry about it and if something does happen I'll consider it an upgrade opportunity . A custom rebuilt drowned engine would be a good bet.

Every time a Hurricane hits the East Coast we get a new supply of used engines from drowned cars and it looks like 2 or 3 are on the way now.

I can't even imagine why anyone would leave their Boxster in harms way...unless it has a failing IMS

Exactly how do you know yours is a dual row?

Fine. We see a lot of people that claim they know which IMS style is in a 2000-2001 from VIN numbers, build dates, or phases of the moon; none of which work.

Come on that's like only 166,500 miles, just getting broke in. Your probably on the original WP and AOS

Do you have any oil leaks?

Thanks for the photo- now i know what IMS bearing looks like w/o the seal with oil inside. I plan on keep driving till need a clutch or rear mail seal then i will probably replace the IMS bearing. Rear seal has a very minor leak. I got 03 boxster 73K miles 5 spd. Just did oil change and air cleaner filter replacement last weekend. I will cut the old oil filter and check for bearing shavings. no service history just got the car w/70k miles 4-5 months ago.

78.5K miles on my '05 with the original IMS. Like many have stated in this thread, I'll treat it like a wear item and replace it when I replace the clutch and RMS. Seems like a waste to go to all that effort to simply swap out the IMS. If she pops, I'll gladly replace the engine for a newer, more powerful version, since the rest of the car is in fantastic shape.

115k still on original IMS

I discussed this with my indy when I first took it to him for service after I purchased. He's worked on Porsches for decades, first in a dealership and then on his own, and strongly recommended against, even at a clutch change. Basic feeling was, those that would fail have failed already, based on all his observations of the many that have come under his wrenches since the introduction of the Boxster.

One hears a lot about how essential it is to replace the bearing but not about real world, current, failures. I'm of a mind to chalk this up to a great marketing job by the manufacturer rather than a real need at this point.
