Any 968 Owners or Knowledgeable Folks? (No, I'm not Dyslexic)

This morning at our monthly Porsche breakfast, someone asked me if I'd sold my Boxster (the silver one, not Punkin). I said no, I'd been offered land in KC for it and straight up for a 2013 Mustang but I hadn't taken either of those deals. I mentioned I hadn't been offered a motorcycle in trade yet (that changed this afternoon).

He asked if I would take his 968 cab in trade. I don't know if he was serious or not, so I didn't pursue it. Now I'm wondering if it would be a good car to trade for. I don't know a lot about the car other than I would rate it in fair cond. I think it's an early 968, so it looks like they only imported ~600 cabs in 92. Hmmmm....

It appears they had issues with the manual trans in early yrs, but that should have been repaired by now. Also looks like timing and drive belts are important to do too. Anything else I should know about or look for before I do any horse trading?

And more importantly, is there a market for a 968 cab?

There's probably a market, at least a niche market for a somewhat advanced 944 with a bit of 928 thrown in. It's still an old car with all those inherent problems, but if you like tinkering and upkeeping your car, i.e. if you are hands-on, it could be a fun venture.

I've seen used prices for 968 cabs as high as $25k for a low mileage one a great condition. The prices I see lately makes me think they ar eWorld more then a comparable condition 986. Who knows what they actually sell for. As a former 944S2 owner the Boxster is a much better car in almost every aspect.

Yah, the 944/968 likes a new water pump, belt and related tensioner ever 50k. Also, if it needs a clutch it's expensive. I needed one and it was almost $2k back in 1997. Its something like 16 hours of labor if I remember correctly.

Some numbers for the 968 Cabriolet:
968 Cabriolet (USA, Kanada) from 1991-1995: 2.010
968 Cabriolet ROW from 1991-1995: 1.949

So it's not a very often built car. Was only built for 4 years. Wasn't a success in sales.

More rare are 968CS (1.538) - very popular and high prices over here in Germany. And there a 2 exotics: 968 Turbo S (10 cars) and 968 Turbo RS (3 cars), i've never seen one in person.

Technically the 968 is also a little bit complicated, because of the transaxle concept. The engine is a 3 litre 4-cylinder, but it's really not a simple engine. Maintenance costs are shurely as high as a 986 car. It doesn't have an ISMB problem. But there are other cost intensive things that can hit you in the back - see post of Porsche9.
