Its flat here in Miami, so in gear only. I had a VW that I left outside, unused during an entire Wisconsin winter, with the parking brake on. If I remember correctly, it took hammers and torches to get it free.

The only good argument I have heard for using the parking brake only, is that if you leave it in first for example and the car gets hit from the front, the motor can get ruined (timing will be thrown off) because the motor will be turning backwards, which is a no-no.

Why would that be a problem? Doesn't the engine turn backwards when in reverse?

(Sorry, that was from a really old post on another car forum.)
