IMS-RMS-Key

I received a quote for IMS upgrade, RMS replacement and window adjustment and was quoted approx $2400 at Porsche dealership in Jackson, MS. Decided to get it done for peace of mind (01 S @ 28k miles). When I dropped off the Box, I went ahead and ordered a key replacement. Was quoted $250. Fast forward two weeks and received call stating everything is ready. I asked for price of repairs and service guy says $3600. I asked why such a variance from initial quote. I was told he would research and call me back. Upon receipt of callback, I was told that the quote was based off a previous repair and that parts cost went up along with labor rate change but that they would knock the price down to $3k due to the miscommunication. I might add that the conversation was non-confrontational but couldn't disregard the sticker shock.

So I ask: Is this in line with other markets??

Wow, that's a small fortune. I paid $1300 for my IMS and RMS at LN approved indie. If they quoted you $2,400 they should stand by that.

The shops listed on the LN site are PREFERRED INSTALLERS, which is nothing more than an advertisement.

The only Certifications are issued by yours truly through IMS Solution LLC. What was the name of the shop that did the work.

When I see cheap prices, I know corners are being cut, because no shop can do the proper pre- qualification and an extensive procedure for that kind of figure.

I give customers prices all week long. $250 to $250k.

If I find after beginning that something is so far off or unexpected, the customer is notified, and I take them to their boiler room and show them part by part what's bad BEFORE I dig in and add $1000 to their job. This way it's their choice, even though the work needs to be done.

Having just done a clutch, and you went dealership, it is hands down unacceptable that they couldn't quote a complete swap, and parts were "more than they thought". It's very straight forward, and unless they said no flywheel and you ended up needing one, or like me your fuel pump dies totally unexpected, you got flogged with a Porsche hose. It's almost criminal, but if after getting an itemized list (they're making that up now probably) you would have elected to make the repairs anyway, well no harm no foul.

When I give a price, it's because I got dirty, spent time looking at the entire project, and called on parts not guessed. Then if I find higher cost parts, it's between me and my supplier, not you. And I will take a substantial hit in labor to not raise a price if I can manage it.

$2400 sounds about right -- $1000 in parts, $1400 labor. Does this line up with your original quote?

BTW - I paid about $3600 for the IMS Solution and RMS install.

I have to side with Timco, who is an ethical mechanic - a stunningly rare occurrence. Unless you got a quote and waited two months there should be no price adjustments

First off, I've seen no dramatic price ramp ups in parts cost. More importantly,, the dealer already charges you about three times the going rate of parts you get from Pelican, Sunset or Auto Atlanta. That mark up is used to pay for those shiny floors and all that glass.

I like shiny floors and glass too, i just prefer them at home.

Second, how did labor cost shoot up 30% after your quote?

Like Timco, if they found anything beyond the initial scope of the job, which does happen, your phone should have rang.

Edit: I would like to clarify that the majority of guys turning wrenches aren't the reason for cost gouging, it is the management

Yes they are a "preferred" installer that have done alot installs of local PCAers and came highly recommended. I got what I paid for.

23,000 miles and 5 oils changes of DT40 later I'm happy with results.

I'm not usually confrontational, but if I got a quote from a DEALER for $2650, then I am paying $2650.

Thats complete BS that they decided to add charges during the service.

Unacceptable from a dealer. I'd hold them to the original quote.

Providing a quote and then jacking the customer around to get more money is not in line with any reputable business.

Not good

First did you get a written quote ?
If you did and they did not contact you they should have to stick with their quote in writing.

If you did not get a written quote, shame on you...always get a written quote

Leaving the two statements above out a shop should always call you in on anything that goes outside of the original quote verbal or written. I could see a 2% variance ...broken bolt , gasket etc....but not this.

Picking her up Tuesday. Will see what the itemized invoice looks like. Yes, I should have gotten a written quote. During my due diligence, I called 2 dealers within 2 hours from me and found both quotes within $100 of each other. Should I have gotten a written quote? Yes. But at $100 variance I took a shot and went with it. Again, a $350 lesson....
