Remote Key battery replacement

I have an 01 Boxster S with the remote control type key (central locking, front/rear hatch buttons). It appears the battery is starting to go so I'm wondering if anyone knows if its necessary to get ripped off at the dealer for the battery as well as how to replace it. Thanks.

Garage
Please do a search on YouTube. The battery is available from
National hardware chains. Home Depot. Very easy to change
5 mins. But take your time doing it.

Pop the cover with a small screwdriver and replace the internal coin battery. Its that easy.

Be sure to keep everything in the same place and don't lose or misplace the little "pill" looking thing. That is the immobilizer transmitter that electronically ties the key to the anti-theft system. Without it, the car won't start.

I just replaced my 15 year old batteries yesterday on both my keys. Here is a link to a video showing you how to do it: http://youtu.be/6LyAuifqJhc Its pretty easy.

The manual also talks about it. I found I could open up the second key by using my fingernail.

I also heard about keys not working after replacing the battery. Some said that you have 10 seconds to replace the battery once you take it out before the key forgets its programming so I made sure to replace it fast once I got the battery out.

But with the first key I found that it only worked intermittently and then it stopped working. I found this website that gave the reason and solution: Remote Key Transmitter Fix - 986 Series (Boxster, Boxster S) - RennTech.org Community

Basically you need to put a paper shim over the battery to put pressure on it to make the contact. They both work great now.

I buy my remote control batteries at the grocery store. Also, any drugstore should have them. I've never heard about having to do it in 10 seconds, and mine have always worked fine (2003 S).

Dollar store, 2 for buck.

Walgreens, CVS, etc. will charge you $10 for two.
