When you install a new top it is recommended that it be put in the closed position manually and left closed for at least a month so that the fabric can stretch. I don't remember if the color of your push rods is the new or old (I think the new one's are white) but if they are the old one's they got brittle over time and the pressure put on it from trying to stretch the new fabric was most likely the culprit. I say this because I got impatient after three weeks with mine and put the top down on a sunny day and snapped both.
The new replacement plastic pieces are sold on eBay for not a lot or you can buy the whole pushrod set with new OEM plastic pieces from the dealer for about $75.
I doubt it was a misalignment just the weak point breaking under pressure.
