I need to top up coolant - it's sitting below Min
hello!
I need to top up coolant - it's sitting below Min-
tap water or anything special, like deionised, distilled or homeopathic water?
and any recommendations for coolant or am OK just to top up with a little water for now?
can I use just tap water for now? since I don't have anything 'special' about?
it's about 10mm below min. so it only really needs a splash
cheers

Distilled water is ok, tap water has minerals and stuff that may nit play nicely in your engine from what I have heard. I had to do a top off of mine over a year ago with distilled water and it gas been like a champ ever since.

first off what coolant is in the system.. do not mix coolant types as the chemical reaction can cause it gel.. if it only needs a little top up water is fine.

For a small top up, you can use distilled water. I just did this a few days ago, and 10mm below the min. mark is probably less than a quart (the entire system is about 6 gallons). The mix is 50/50 distilled water and coolant, and as Bruce said do not mix coolants.

I recently had this same question; my mechanic recommended bottled water. The chlorine in tap water may interact with some coolant chemicals...

Just make sure to read the label. Much of the bottled water out there comes from municipal water supply, so would contain chlorine and fluoride and all that good stuff.

go to the local grocery store or wallyworld and buy a gallon of distilled water to keep in your garage/house
costs around a buck
bottled/spring water has minerals and other stuff in it for better taste

My new job has taught me many things about water I never knew. We produce water that is among the purest ever in existence, so pure it will not conduct electricity and it too pure to drink....or make coffee with.
I wonder how it would fair for top off water for our cars.

I'm assuming your talking about water passed through a RO system. If you are don't put it in you car. Highly caustic to metal. We produce it to mix press fountain chemistry. It eats brass, aluminum, mild and alloy steel. They recommend you use only with 306SS or 316SS and PVC.
