Split and self mount Rear tires

So I need to replace rear tires and would like to buy from TireRack and I'm fretting at who could mount. So I started thinking, why could I not split the wheels and mount them myself
Isn't that the point of 2 piece rims?
Split the rim, slide the old tires off, slide the new on, re-bolt the 2 pieces back together, take them to get balanced

Anyone see faults in this idea?

I have searched several times trying to get torque values for these BBS Sport Design rims and they vary from 20/ft lbs to 40

I'm a TIRE RACK dealer, and I often get emails from them letting me know that they are shipping tires purchased by a customer in my area to my shop to be mounted and balanced on the customers car. I believe they can help you find an installer, and will ship directly! Hope this helps,

two piece rims does not nec mean it will split into two halves. I would not recommend it. besides you need to balance the assembly afterwards...

Let someone else get their hands dirty doing this.

As long as you have to take the wheels in to be balanced, you might as well have them install the tires.

And I thought that two-piece wheels were meant to facilitate wheel repairs (e.g., replace a bent or damaged outer hoop and reuse the same inner mounting portion), not to ease tire installation. But I'll also admit that I learn something new on this site almost every day.

In my dream garage, I own a tire installation and balancing machine...

the barrel of that wheel is a single piece...the bolts only remove the center.

It would have to be a 3 piece wheel to do what you're talking about. These are usually race wheels not street and allow replacement of a damaged piece instead of the whole wheel. They take much longer to assemble than to mount a tire.
I have 2 pc. wheels and Discount Tires did a great job of mounting new tires and balancing.

Thanks all with the response insight. Will verify local tire shop with road force balance machine is also authorized Tire Rack installer

As a side note, one of my outer rings (Actually the one pictured) is in need of a serious deep polish. Any suggestions on heavy duty aluminum polishing pastes and techniques that could bring back the polish.

This is crazy talk KK...no offense. I am sure spending $40 to mount tires is totally worth avoiding mishaps in this arena. Tires was the one job I always outsourced. These cars are Sooo sensitive to tire balance, I would only use the very best equipment and disrupt as little as possible. I do not think 2 piece wheels can do this anyway, but again, you should find the $40 a sound investment.

If you want it to look like a mirror chrome finish after polishing then use the Nuvite polish system.

There are different grades to progress through depending on how bad the existing surface is.

The results however are amazing and last a long time.
