Personally I haven't had any concerns about the longevity or durability of the wraps, and that's living in a climate with 20 degree (F) winter temps through to 100 degree summer temps.

Here are a couple of pics of a vinyl wrap as applied to my last tarmac rally car in 2008:

And here's the same car in 2012 when the wrap was about to be removed:

Please note I'm not an installer or reseller of vinyl products so I can't speak beyond my own personal experience, but I've never had any issues with the quality of the wraps on my personal cars, even after a few years of use.

We keep the company cars wrapped for around 7 years before they're stripped and traded and again I haven't seen wear and tear on the vinyl that's too much different from the wear and tear you'd get on regular paintwork over the same period.

We have people come in routinely that complain about our competition from time to time. There really is a learning curve to how you can heat and stretch the vinyl to get around corners without wrinkles and without compromising the installation long term.
Nothing to do with labor cost. The guys in the industry here are businessman first, artist second. They won't charge you 4k for a wrap. Instead they'll do it for 1/4 of that price but make sure you come back each year to re-wrap - or tell a friend. Of course being inexpensive, the volume of cars they wrap per week is "immense". Fully booked, 18hrs per day, always 2~3 guys in the average 'shop'.

More work you'll say, yes, but at the end.... it pays off so much more than doing only a handful of expansive and detailed jobs. Materials gets so much more cheaper also as you use 4x times more.

Get it!?

They wrap the mirrors only half here, same for spoilers. They do remove badges but not the trims (rarely).

It is a "wrap" in all its sense. $500, half day in/out job. Huge huge huge business....

Just got a quote from a place in Connecticut that is supposed to be one of the best in the state and they said they would do my 986 for $3200. This would include 5 years of maintenance (regluing edges, fixing bubbles, etc).

I would be surprised if they were using premium branded

materials if they are charging $500. Even purchasing in bulk, you do not get that much of a pricing break. I would love to see some photos of their work at the $500 price point to compare.

So far so good...be very careful when applying the vinyl

as the matte finishes can get "burnished" with scratches and rub marks from the squeegee. If you overheat it, it will destroy the matte finish as well...a heat gun set on low may be the safest thing to use. Good luck....will be interested to see how you do on the mirrors and side air vents.
