Sounds like the brake light switch needs to be replaced. If it's a VW/Audi part, then it would make sense that it's gone bad.

It appears it is the brake light switch alright. I can move the pedal and stick my finger up in there and turn off my brake lights. Now I gotta figure how to get the switch out. There's a/c ducting in the way. I'm glad I'm slim enough to fit underneth the dash.
