Same experience here, one of the first DIY repairs, 2001 S. My hands are not that small and I did find it to be a bear to snap the switch into place.
It may just need cleaning. I ordered a new one from Pelican, before it arrived I used contact cleaner and got the old one working. Two years later it's still in the car with the new one in a box as backup.
