I'm a bit confused Johnny. A short time ago you were contemplating selling your Boxster because you live 2 miles down an unmaintained gravel road and have to garage it 10 miles away. Has this changed?
You could always take the cost of that new car, add that to what you will lose on the existing one if you sold it, and use that money to have your street asphalted so you can park your car at home.

My garaging situation has changed for the better. I found a location that's closer and more accommodating than the last.

A nicely optioned PTS 981 S will be just north of $90. So, if you have about $75 cash in hand ready, plus another $9 to cover sales tax, go for it! Assuming you can get about $20 for the dangermobile.
Or buy the base Boxster in Mexico Blue, ship it to the guys in Florida doing 400 HP 991 S engine swaps for about an additional $22 and you'll have a real beast and a Carrera killer.

The price is quite high I know. Which brings me back to the ongoing dilemma of wanting a 360 Modena. My concern with the Ferrari at this point is age, and cost of maintenance. Not so much the required maintenance, but the small irritating things that can go wrong.

Figure about $10 per year for that. Some years less, so more. Plus insurance.

And therein lies the root of the issue.
JD, if in your own heart of hearts you desire to own a Ferrari (and who hasn't desired that since their adolescence?), then by all means pursue that objective.
If you never go for it, you will never achieve it.

I'd seriously consider the Ferrari 360 before a new 981. The 981 is just a newer 986 -you've kinda been there done that.
The 360 is in a completely different ballpark but if you can live with the cost of Porsche repairs, you can probably live with the cost of Ferrari repairs.

A good question here is does anybody think about resale of a car especially when you are talking about buying a new car? Not trying to hijack your thread though but is it a factor in this purchase?
Would a new 981 depreciate more than a Ferrari?
For instance I have never had a car that appreciated in my life. My Box base follows the same pattern.....however I would not have changed anything in my purchase.

I don't think in terms of depreciation. I think in terms of consumption. In other words, I am consuming the car's value over time, so it will logically be worth less after a period of time.
I bought my 2006 Boxster S for $70. Drove it for 7.5 driving seasons, almost 60,000 miles and sold it this September for $30. Seems far to me. So it cost me about $0.67/mile to drive. So, when I do a 320 mile Saturday morning drive to enjoy the weather, great roads and awesome car, I spent $215. Big whip. People spend that much on golf and booze on a weekend morning.
On the other hand, I bought my 1997 993 Turbo in 2009 for low $60's and drove it for 4 years and 40,000 miles and sold it this summer for low $90's. So, it all depends.
I have a new 991 C2S Cabriolet on order for March delivery. Lots of options. Very expensive. +$150. Sure I'll get hammered on depreciation/consumption, but I really don't care. It's paid for. I'll have it for at least 10 years. Doesn't matter what it's worth or not worth in 10 years.
Yes, I think a new modern Ferrari will depreciate faster than a new modern Porsche.

I have. When I sold my 964 I got more for it. In the mean time it has continued to appreciate.
