New 918 at the Ring

Some of you may know about this site but if you go to Boldride.com - Car Pictures, News and Videos you can see a record setting drive of the new 918 at the Ring. First video is from the outside but if you look at some of the other options after the first video is finished you can get a rousing 8 minute in car camera ride. Near the end of the clip is a long straight that really gets this car moving. I don't know how fast but it is not slow. Also note the sawing of the wheel to keep the monster, 887 horsepower, on the road.

For perspective about what a fast time that is (understatement), the McLaren P1 was 7:04.

I think you can officially kiss any chance of a rear engine Porsche owning this record good bye forever.

p.s.
By the reaction of the 918 chief engineer, you can tell they were not completely convinced that a time like 6:57 was on the cards even if the models told them differently. Going quicker than ZR1, LFA, and Viper ACR by nearly 20 seconds and quicker than the rumored Macca P1 is a game-changer. And makes the 918 quiet the bargain compared to the British and Italian versions.

^I wish they would just put a 3.8L in the 918, make it out of alluminum and steel, and price it under $100K.

To offer some further perspective, the only sub-7 minute lap of the Nurburgring recorded in an F1 Grand Prix was in 1975, when Niki Lauda scored pole position with a time of 6:58.06.

And a Formula One car in 1975 was a ferocious beast, indeed.

As an aside, the premiere of the move "Rush", an account of the 1976 F1 Championship battle between Niki Lauda and James Hunt, premieres in U.S. theatres on 09/20.

^ F1 magazine has a great GP by GP spread on Lauda's miracle season. Saw it at Barnes & Noble.
Niki Lauda had his own airline at one point. Amazing dude.

Awesome video! Under 7 mins is epic. I imagine that this level of proven performance will boost sales quite a bit.
