Another IMS failure
IMS bearing diagnosed as failed by Porsche. Currently in the shop for a new engine. 2004 base boxster. 51,000 miles. Last oil change 2500 miles ago. I just purchased the car in March. I'll have more to say once the job is done.

What prompted you to have it diagnosed?

Sorry to hear that. Were you aware of the IMS issue after purchasing?

I had it diagnosed after it made screeching noises, the check engine light came on, and dumped the majority of its oil in my garage.

Sorry for your situation. Curious to see if the ratio of failures as the M96 motor grows longer in the tooth continues to increase (if it even is doing so now). Good question for Jake.
I sincerely hope Porsche steps up and helps you out BlackCloud.

You may qualify for the class action settlement for IMSB failures. Do a search for the terms of the settlement.

Hi, sorry for your loss, always terrible to hear.
WOW, lots of IMS issues lately here, statistic if someone posting here about IMS failure, there must be at least 2-3 unrecorded IMS issues out there...

San,
Every time I see your list of previous cars, it makes me wonder if you're not some kind of a masochist ?

More people looking for infomation or help with a problem will post on a site like this. Thousand of other with no interest in a blog site or problem will ever post or connect to a forum. So I would believe the statistic gathered from hit on IMS problems on forums are skewed as well as every other complaint. I don't know how many time I read a post saying the car they drive has 100K +

We are booked for 13 months solid for stage II and stage III builds at the present. Typically this time of year we have a 7 month backlog for these engines and our spring is not filled until Thanksgiving.
Of those only one of them is coming here electively, the rest have stemmed from failures.
This doesn't count the Stage I builds that generally stem from failures as well as the engines on the schedule on the repair side of the house.
More are failing from other things, because more and more have had the IMSB addressed. Intermix from cracked heads is and has been our biggest killers for the last 3 years.

127,500 and I put the last 8000 on it. Daily driver. Purrrrrs like a kitten, not a tick. I drive it hard, average 12mpg.
I'll probably swap the bearing sometime, but not priority.

Except for the TR7, all the cars were relatively trouble free. The Opel was probably my best deal, bought for $350 anD put close to 100k miles driving all over the country to bicycle races.

Hi Jake, is this partly because owners are not proactive enough with water pump replacements?
