Who knew that Porsche made plane engines?

Saw this in the aviation section of the "Deutsches Museum" in Munich last week

Nothing quite like having your IMS let loose at 15000 ft.

That engine has a plain bearing supported IMS (layshaft). They don't fail.
I'd fly behind a Mezger engine, no problem.

actually if it fails at 15000 feet you are lucky..!

However, if it fails at takeoff (full of fuel) you are not :-(

Limbach aircraft engines are made from aircooled Porsche engine parts and vw parts.

Ifly with a 2000cc Limbach.

As a teen, I recall drooling on the pages of my flying magazine when I learned that the new Mooney PFM included a 1yr lease of a 911! I'm 39 now and have a non-porsche Mooney and a non-911 Porsche, but I think the teenage me would be totally stoked on both.

The Porsche Aero engine turned out not to be as great as touted and Porsche did everything they could to remove them from the market. I believe all of the flying PFM Mooneys have been retro fitted with Cont/Lyc engines... Porsche stopped supporting the engines long ago in an effort to limit liability...
