Well, I just got a call from my insurance company. The rep said that the adjuster has not actually inspected the car yet but does not believe it is a total loss, partly because the airbags did not deploy and also because it is front end damage and it is a rear wheel car. She went on to say that the adjuster told her that he has been in the business a long time and knows what he is doing. No ****************, that is exactly what she said. Now they want to tow it to my repairer of choice (dealer$$$) so the adjuster can inspect the car there and then they can do a tear down and get a supplemental damage estimate. I told the rep I would not authorize having it moved until the adjuster had actually SEEN the damage, which, after putting me on hold and talking to the adjuster, she agreed to do.

Here's some better pics of the damage. Notice that the wheel is pushed towards the rear at least 4". That to me means at the very least wheel, brake, tires, suspension, coolant system, left front fender, driver's side door, hood, bumper, headlights and possibly the frame. And who knows what effect it had on the rest of the car? Anyone think that the bill to make this good as new will be below the percentage of cost to declare it a total loss?

Update: Just got off the phone with the actual adjuster. He said it's not even close to being a total. His initial estimate is $11K. USAA wants 80% of value (~26K) before they declare a total loss. His comment was that it looks worse than it is and that it is nothing but a volkswagon underneath.

At the initial view it does NOT look even close to a total loss. I wouldn't worry about the body being out of alignment. Time to focus on the positives:

First off I would stop worrying about the reporting of the car and leaving the car. You did the correct thing of taking care of your wife. The car is a material thing and fixable. I hope nothing happened to your wife and she will get over the accident with a speedy and full recovery. A couple of feet to the right of the point of impact and maybe both would not be around at all. The adjusters comment is something I don't understand and comprehend that underneath there are all vw's. Only thing I can figure about a statement like that it was a veiled attempt at sophomoric humor. Ignore the jerk and be thankful nothing bad happened to you and your wife.

Pilot, thank you for the sentiments about my wife. She is indeed doing ok, just sore (like I am) and a few bruises. I know what you mean about a foot to the right...I saw those headlights coming right into me and thought I was a goner.

As for the damage, last year I had a woman in a pickup back up and ram her towball into my hood. Had to replace the bumper cover, hood and one headlight (it was slightly cracked), along with paint. Total cost: $3500. Now I have much more substantial damage, both in amount and to the pieces damaged. Wheel, brake, tire, fender, suspension, control arm, radiators, condenser, fender, door etc. And that is just the visible stuff. Plus, who knows how the impact affected the rest of the car.

One piece of good news is that I can put in a claim for dimished value. Also, if I get it repaired at a USAA approved shop they guarantee all work for life, and it is transferable. So I can discount the repaired car by the diminished value amount and give a subsequent purchaser a lifetime warranty on the repairs.

damn man, sorry to hear about your problem. Still though, seems like you have your priorities in order. Wife > Box. This sucks but I am sure it will all work out. It always does...

I'll be reviewing my USAA membership this afternoon. Please keep this info flowing. Talk about adding insult to injury! VW indeed.

And let me add sympathy for your loss. Guess that's something we all dread. As others said, glad everyone okay. Good luck.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,mike
