Intake Side Vent, Extended?

I remember reading/seeing a air vent for the intake side which sticks out more then the oem part to "scoop" in more air.

Does anyone know what im talking about and who makes it?

Kirk did a write up on his mods and the air ducts are one of them. The only thing that turned me off from buying them as soon as I saw them is that they'll pretty pricey around $400-$500 for the pair. I also remember reading it and agreeing with him that there isn't much to stop someone from just grabbing it and ripping it out. Not saying that anyone would, but who knows, people can be jealous/spiteful/dumb. Let us know if you end up getting pair and post a pic of how they look

Is this a complete replacement of the oem air vent or an attachment? I thought i read here once that Gambella make these, for some reason the kokeln look cheap.

Gembella did a slightly modified version of the oem intakes as part of their wide body kit for the boxster . The ones in question are exclusively from Koklen Racing.

Seems like its a good concept. And makes the boxster look more aggressive. On the to buy list over the winter.

If you're looking for a purely cosmetic enhancement, I like these turbo style intakes for the bolster.

Bingo! These are the ducts that I've seen on several track/racing Boxsters. They look pretty nice on the right car (one with a full body kit). Not sure about how much they help from a performance viewpoint.

I think they might work on cars with a very non-restrictive air filter (a.k.a. nylon sock)
On cars with normal air filters (including K&N) the turbulence created by the air going through the filter will rob the "ram air" effect of it's punch

Lets say you have a EVO intake and a custom tube extension so that the actual filter is inside the vent (visible from the outside of the car) and then adding the vent "scoop" from Kokeln I dont see how that wouldn't create a satisfying amount of performance gains.

i figure that a 3.2 wants to see over 11,500 litres of fluid (air) per minute at 7,200 rpm (3.2 litre displacement every second rotation x 7,200 redline). one litre of fluid is, what, 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm = 1000 cm cubed. if we assume the ram air intake is 10 cm x 5 cm = 50 cm square, then each litre of air is like a 1000 / 50 = 20 cm column stacked in front of the intake. 20 cm/litre = .2 metres/l x 11,500 l/min = 2,300 meters/minute = 138 kph.

throw in sole losses and the ram air scoop is only of benefit on some really fast tracks.
