Oil for 2000 Boxster S

Bought Mobil 1 0w-40. Which according to the manual is for all temps. Just want to check and make sure before I pour it all in as it's the first time. Thanks.

if you are asking for opinions on that brand you might want to do a search. Mobil 0-40 may be the factory fill but many, including some experts familiar with the Boxsters engine issues, are quiet vocal about disagreeing that this brand provides the best protection. I use the Castrol synthetic, Autozone usually has a 5 quart deal for about $27 where they toss in a free filter which is at least a $12 value. I try to change the oil every 7 months so I look for deals on oil.

I have read extensively on the subject and despite what many on this forum have to say, the petroleum experts (not the car owners) believe that Mobil 1 0W40 provides more than adequate protection for a boxer engine. I have used Mobil 1 0W40 for several years now with excellent results.
The best way to start a fire storm on this forum is bring up the subject of oil -- followed closely by the choice of tires.

true it is usually a heated debate. But I think a new Boxster owner should be aware of the wide range of opinions of Mobil 1 for this car. Well in at least that there are other factory approved oils with much less controversy surrounding them.

I used Mobil 1 0w-40 from the Walmart for my most recent change on my 2000 S. I'm an oil agnostic.

As stated above, save some heartburn and do the search, then put in the Mobile 1. While there are differing opinions many coming from racers, trackers and some from us "just drivers" one thing stands true, if you use factory recommended fluids, you'll be fine. You won't get everyone's agreement, but you'll be fine. For what it's worth, I use Mobile 1 and have for my 4 different Porsches without one second of worry.

I prefer to listen to Jake Raby, Charles Navarro and JFP in PA...I don't trust the factory recommendations, as they are obscured by marketing deals.

My engine is healthy and there's no clatter at startup, like it did when it was running M1 0W40. Thank goodness it only saw 8k miles before I made changes.

Mobil 1 0/40 USED to be an awesome oil until they switched it from a group IV basestock to a group III (in 06 or 07 I think)

I use Motul 8100 xcess, turner motorsports has it for $37 (I think) for a 5qt jug (group IV basestock oil)

Ditto. I don't trust the geniuses that brought us the IMS and 20 or more other modes of engine failure in an expensive car.

Just posting what I have done and used in the past. No arguments here.

Mobil 1 in all of my vehicles present and past (see sig, and add 2 XJRs, 1 S Type, 1 C6 Z51 Vette, 1 Q45, 1 NSX-T, 1 Nissan Frontier), and no engine failures or problems.

Using Mobil 5W50. Hard to find oil (Industrial Lubricants | Food Grade Lubricants), Porsche approved. Prior to that, used Red Line 5W40.

I run UOA's and they are excellent. Only way to know if your oil selection is right for you.

The M96 is a somewhat unique beast when it comes to failures.

well put. If you refuse to admit, after the fact, that a fundamental and potentially castastrophic design flawe was baked into your engines, then I have a hard taking your assurances on much else. I'll take 'Porsche approved' oil as more of a guide.

Hmm. Aren't those the people who designed the entire engine and the entire car? Or was it that there's an entire, competent engineering team and then one dude at the end of the design cycle adding unreliable parts when no one is looking? And that's the same guy who spec's oils?

This oil debate reads like "War and Peace". After reading through the lengthy article that someone posted from Ferrari-Chat, all evidence suggests that we should be using 0w weight oil in our vehicles . Yes or no ?

I don't specifically know how Porsche does it, but I doubt the guys that designed the engine were the same guys that designed the rest of the car. Car designs are usually split into teams, with someone providing overall integration co-ordination. And each team would have its budget for design. Some parts of cars are strong, and others aren't. In this case the M96 design is weak.

The basic issue in this thread (as in many others) is oil, and I'll trust Used Oil Analysis results every time before "that's what the manufacturer recommends".
