I don't specifically know how Porsche does it, but I doubt the guys that designed the engine were the same guys that designed the rest of the car. Car designs are usually split into teams, with someone providing overall integration co-ordination. And each team would have its budget for design. Some parts of cars are strong, and others aren't. In this case the M96 design is weak.

The basic issue in this thread (as in many others) is oil, and I'll trust Used Oil Analysis results every time before "that's what the manufacturer recommends".
