Understanding ssk reduction numbers

The long throw and imprecision of my '01 S's shifter is the only part of the car that I really can't stand.

I installed the standard 997 shifter, which is supposed to be a 20% reduction from the stock 986, but it is still not enough.

I'm getting the B&M ssk for Xmas, so now the question is: which console should I install it in for the maximum reduction in shift throw, the original, or the 997?

B&M quotes a 35% reduction whether you install it in a 986 or 997 console, but if the standard 997 console starts out as 20% lower, how can that be?

What am I missing?

It's all in the lever. The consoles are all the same save for a loop for some wiring added in the 9x7.

It's not lower, by the way. The lever sits at the same height in all the systems.

Hands down, the b&m will be shorter.

I had it in my 986 and it was shorter than OEM shifter in my 997 when I got it.

That said, either housing will be fine for it and since there is marketability for the 9x7 shifter, you should unstall in 9x6 housing and resell the 9x7 assembly.

Here's what I found when I was researching:

In order of shift distance, shortest to longest:

Porsche / B&M short shifter for 986 35% reduction
Agency Power 35% reduction
Schnell 30% reduction
Porsche 987/997 short shifter 997-424-983-00 25% reduction
Evo Swift Shift 20% reduction
Porsche 987/997 standard shifter 997-424-010-00 15% reduction

This is also the order of notchiness, most notchy first.

I went for the 9x7 short shifter. Easy install (entire tower), and the throw length was a huge improvement, without too much notchiness. I drove an '01 S with the B&M before I made my decision, and found it too notchy for my liking.

If it is all in the lever, then it all makes sense to me now.

I'll be installing the B&M this winter, but won't be putting many miles on the car until Spring. I'll let you know what I think of it then.

BTW, last Fall I also installed a new front motor mount to help the situation, figuring that it needed to be done at 40k miles. Probably because the old mount wasn't cracked or anything, the effect was negligible.
