I have never owned a car that makes me smile like my Boxster. 97 Base with 79,000 miles. While it has been perfectly dependable thus far, I did not make the purchase thinking nothing could ever go wrong. All purchases have risks. If a risk exceeds your risk threshold, don't take it.

For me, I'll take the smiles any day and if something happens to my Boxster, I'll get it fixed like I do with anything else.

PEOPLE HAVE HAD TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE WITH 15,000 miles
on a $60+ thousand dollar best engineered car in the world..
They may be few and far between but I don't think it's asking
too much for $60,000 to reach 100000 miles on it 95 percent
of the time without having to UPGRADE internals of Their engine
they built and sold!

I came on this site to do my homework in preparation of taking delivery
of a very well maintained family member owned 2000 boxster S triple black with 44,000 miles on it for family price of $12,000. Sounds like a deal compared with local autotrader sites and stopping at lots only to see 1998 boxster with 108,000 miles for $14k or 2003 with 128k on it and all sun faded and abused for $12 k. These used dealers are smoking some good stuff I guess

Reading posts taught me alot and I was prepared for the increased maintenance cost and other breakages that may occur... But who cares about that because I would be driving a Porsche. I loved every minute I drove it the day it was loaned to me.
I couldn't Get the permagrin off of my face for a week. When opportunity knocked for me to get this from my brother I jumped because I know it's history for real unlike buying from anywhere else. I was ready to pamper the new to me baby and care for it in exchange for the fun it would provide. The wife even got a new leather jacket in preparation of cooler fall top down evening drives.
What I wasn't prepared for was this car hasn't had the IMS bearing UPGRADED so I have this vision in the back of my head of six months down the road the deal is up to $26,000 due to the new engine I had to put in it.

Well what do you know It blew up two weeks before I was to go and get it! Two weeks! 44k on the odometer and it has IMS failure and needs a new engine for $14k. What are the odds? Talk about bit o luck! Saved me from some serious buyers remorse.. Or did I jinx it by reading new posts on here about IMS failures? Either way I don't get my deal or the fun.

Not for everybody huh! I have just as much right to buy one as you! Volkswagen means?

Ten years old .. 44k on the clock and it's dead because it didn't get it's bearing upgraded because the factory one was ****************. You shouldn't have to upgrade!!

Just very ironic that this happened the way it did. Just a little soured.

I agree. You don't want to be an alarmist but IMO sticking your head in the sand is worse.

The sad part is when a new Porsche owner buys a car but doesn't know about these issues until they enthusiastically join a forum like this one and read more bad than good.. They quickly start to question their purchase and they generally then start shooting us emails, looking for some sort of positive support for the engine issues. I average abut 5 of these emails and 1-2 calls per week from these people, or people are looking to buy a Porsche and want info on the engine up front.

The engines have issues, they need more preventive and periodic maintenance and repair than people believe to stay in top shape.

All cars have their issues... high performance ones more so. Add in the fact that these cars tend to be driven harder then the average daily commuter you are going to at times have problems.

I can't say my 2001 s has had an easy life... tons of track time and it even gets the suspension backed off and driven in the winter. After 160,000 km it has needed some items (clutch, due to failed pressure plate... several RMS replacements... suspension parts wearing, wheel bearings, etc) but considering how hard this car has been driven I am very impressed with how well it holds up. I know that I will have to rebuild or replace the engine sooner or later (either Jakes 3.6, or an x51 3.8) and even with that kind of expense into it I can't think of another car that would give this level of fun at this low a price.

I have had other cars ingest their engines (my old 944 turbo went through 3, and my WRX, totally stock spun a bearing one week out of warranty for a quick $10,000) and know that it always sucks, but it is the risk of driving high performance vehicles.

If you like Boxsters, find the best one you can, keep on top of maintaining it, and have fun.

Over and over again the cars and engines that see a ton of track time seem to be the best of the breed.. Seldom do we have failure calls from those stating their cars have been driven hard, tracked and generally thrashed on.. As an owner of 3 M96 powered vehicles, I agree that the harder I drive them, the better they run.

Jake, maybe you can engineer a shift lockout that will not allow upshifts below 6000 RPM. A "You're driving like a pansy" indicator on the instrument cluster might also work as a preventative measure for engine failure...

As much as the "Drive it like you stole it - it's good for it!" sounds counterintuitive, it does make me feel even better about two autocrosses next weekend.

I love my Boxster, but the engine has a design flaw, end of story. It's not because of hard usage, or because it's a "high performance" engine. . The specific output is not that high, a VTEC gets 10-12% more, and will do it for 200k miles.

I will feel better when I can afford a 2010, but worry doesn't detract from the fun I have with this otherwise fantastic car!

I'm not a wealthy man - far from it, and I couldn't just snap my fingers and produce 15 grand for a fresh engine. But this is the coolest car I have ever owned (and I'm 52) and no matter what happens, I'm really glad I bought it. If the engine blew tomorrow it would probably take me about a year to save up the money for a new one, and in the meantime I would just have to sit in it, in my garage, with my hands on the wheel, saying "vroom vroom" and that would still be more fun than driving anything else.
