Well the 987S is already 280? Will another 20-40HP would make that big a difference? That guy I saw whipping the pants off that 987S during the test drive sure was having fun though!
And of course what's HP without the right amount of torque?
I'm fearing the day that the 987S shows up to a local Autocross event, I'll have to decide to ask to ride along for one lap and possibly hate and curse my 986S forever!
(Actually I'm kidding, that new front end is still not rubbing off on me since I first saw it)

The Cayman will be the ultimate drivers tool I predict. The boxster S (987) is already doing 0-60 in 5 flat and mid 13 sec 1/4's. A 3.4L cayman will proabbly hit high 4's 0-60 and low 13 sec 1/4 miles. That's C5 territory in the straights plus unreal cornering capabilities.

I would love my 2.5 Boxster to have more power, but lets be realistic here. It may be the slowest of these cars, but it's still plenty fast. At 0-60 in 6.7, 1/4 mile in about 14.5, it's quite adequate for my needs. The first car I ever drove was my father's 1969 Z-28, a legendary muscle car that, for its time, was considered a great handler. The straight line performance was maybe .3/sec faster, top speed not as good , and it got 9 miles/ gallon on Sunoco 260. I think we're well past the point of overkill on horsepower with most of today's performance cars.
With that said, a local Porsche specialists thinks he can install a 3.4 motor with headers in my car for about $12,000. Tempting.......

I would seriously consider doing the swap to the 3.4L if you can get it at that price...and the people are competent. I posted a story about a guy who did a FVD 3.4L swap on his 99 and the results were very impressive and I'm sure he paid alot more than what you quoted. He was doing 12.8's in the 1/4 on street tires. That's less than an eyeblink slower than a 400hp C6!

If you look at the MSRP for the '05 Carrera vs the Turbo, Porsche has about a 90% premium for the Turbo car ... $69,300US vs $131,400.
In the Cayenne line, the std car is $41,400 vs $89,300 for the Turbo, a 117% premium.
Translating this onto the Boxster would give a speculative price of about double that of the base model, or $43,800US vs say $85,000 for the thusfar non-existant "Turbo" Box.
Thusfar only one respondant has indicated a willingness to pay anywhere near what Porsche would probably want for the car.
As they say in the racing world, speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

I recently took my Boxster S on the track in Pahrump. There were 2 indentical BMW's M3 Coupe with the 330 HP engine. The three of us were in the same class(Beginners); so we got to see how both cars behaved. It was real strange, in the corners, I would really gain grounds while in the straights I would loose it. At one point one of the BMW's feeling my heat behind it, spun out of control and went off the track on a tight turn; it was sweet. The other driver with a bit more skill, stuck to me like glue. The moral I think:
A Boxster with a 250HP is better than an M3 Coupe with 330 HP. I just love the way the S take the curves on the track and brakes off speed. At the end of a straight and before a 90 Deg turn, my speed was at 105 MPH, the car brakes and suspension, made it look easy. You just cannot get into trouble and if I did, lifting the foot off the gas a bit corrected things quickly.
I think if I had more HP without beefing up brakes and suspension, I would get into trouble coming out of a straight into a tight turn. The car as it is is very well balanced. Why fool around with a good thing?

On the other hand, using this logic, we would not have a Boxster S, but a base box with 204HP!
You get my point, no?
BTW-What you described happening on the track is exactly what I would have predicted. Not strange at all but kind of cool if you own a Box!

I was watching the Valvoline Run Offs a couple years back(the year Saucier had his controversial win) and the little Miatas were outpacing many higher horsepowered cars. Cars like the Integra would close up the gap on the straights but the RWD Miatas would lose them in the turns. I guess it hold true at the lower end of the HP spectrum as well.

Need more HP hang tight PORSCHE will provide, in 2000 the S put out 240 horse,
the 987S is at 280 in 3 or 4 yrs. it will be at 300. My new S will address enough of the issues over my ' 99 to keep me happy. In 7 or 10 yrs the drop into the seats may be more than my bones can handle forget about getting out again, may have to rig a hoist in the garage.
