I get the same feeling about Facebook too. Most of the people on their that my wife is friends with I've never even heard of. All-in-all I don't trust it. Although it is fun... but like other people have said here, if i'm not currently friends with people right now from the past what's the point? I only have so many hours in a day for my own family let alone people from the past.

I am sorry to hear of your issue, and am sure you understand what my wife feels, even though it is unfounded here.

I just got a friendship request on FB from a guy I grew up with 30 years ago. He talked me into doing all sorts of bad things as a kid and grew up to be a very abrasive person I would never spend time with today.

The nice thing about FB is that you can simply click the "ignore" button and the other person will never know you did it and will probably assume you don't log into your FB account much if at all.

I clicked "ignore" on this guy and I've done it to a couple of other people I used to know... one was an old flame I have no reason to connect with any longer (happily married for 22 years and fighting hard to keep it that way).

Ah, personal boundaries. It's great to have them and use them online as well as offline.

Facebook can be used for organizing events, like regional get togethers.
It's also convenient for getting know people beyond our forum monikers.

There's not really that much you can do there that we can't do here... but it's another way to mess about while at work. Ha!

I'm glad to know that they don't know if you hit ignore. It hasn't gotten bad yet, but what I liked about facebook is I didn't have just random people just adding me like on MySpace, and thankfully I haven't gotten any "hey baby u r sexy" messages yet on facebook either. It seems a little more "real." I am getting a couple here and there though that I'm like who is this person? They seem to have no common interests and I have no clue where they found me. One guy's profile isn't even in English, in fact, isn't even in the same alphabet. It's farsi or something.

I have a friend that can't undertand why I don't sign up for these social networking sites. The main reason is a lack of interest. It just doesn't appeal to me.

I'd much rather spend my online time here!

Interesting, I just read an Internet Security report that I get monthly citing Social Networking Groups and Facebook in particular as prime targets for hackers.

Facebook boasts over 175M members and where are the cyber nare-do-wells gonna find a better 'feeding ground' than that?

All they need is to get one (out of 175M) unsuspecting member to open their email and they can then propagate their viruses, trojans and worms through that member's address book where it spreads .

The report went on to say that this is where the majority of the newer virilent viruses have been traced to. The ones which invade your root files and are therefore immune to any AV software you may be running. These can also self-replicate and mutate. In most cases, the only fix is to wipe your HDD.

So as much as I love you guys, I'm taking a pass on Facebook.

BTW, if you do any online purchasing or banking, then a major concern to you should be the danger of someone invading your system and keylogging it. Keylogging is where they can uncover your keystrokes and from these recover your logins, passwords, CC #s and such.

Trend Micro has a nifty little free program to foil these guys. It's called Transaction Guard. Basically, you download a virtual keyboard and type your sensitive data to it with a mouse. Then you go to your banking site, vendor or even an ISP and cut & paste the info to the site from the virtual keyboard. This way, there are no keystrokes for a hacker to log. While it is a bit more cumbersome than using your keyboard, it does offer absolute protection from keylogging. See it here: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/transaction_guard#

Okay, so too much fun.
Let's have a contest, sort of, to match facebook names with their "true" identity here!!
Some are obvious from things like avatars or Randall Neighbor using the same name both places.
Others, like Jeph, have some unique spelling and some, like Love Bunny, have posted pics of themselves in the frunk......
So let the fun begin!!
