Rim to Wheel

Times have changed. When I was a teenager in the 60s, the rim held the tire and the entire assembly bolted onto the wheel. That concept seems to have changed and I now hear both terms used interchangeably. But if that's the case, what do you call the round thing the wheel bolts onto?

It's alot like the what constitutes a motor and engine debate.
