Well I got the crank case apart. The crank looks usable to me, nice and shiny on the journals no scoring. I’m going to take it to get magna flux and inspected so will let the experts tell me for sure if it’s usable or not.

I found out I can’t measure and test fit the crank case and the crank until I have the ARP crankcase bolts I’m using in hand. The ARP bolts I need are back ordered for a while, and I’m going to pick them up when I pick up my block in November or December, so it’ll probably be not that many updates for a while.

I was recently corresponding with Len Hoffman owner of Hoffman Automotive Machine. Http://www.hamheads.com about valve springs, and the subject of my 3.8 rebuild with bone stock 3.2 heads came up, and he said the following: (reposting with permission)

Quote:
The 3.2 heads will definitely work well with the 3.8 upgrade. There's no replacement for displacement.
So, someone should probably tell one of the most knowledgeable experts on Porsche heads in the world that his knowledge of Porsche heads is “Rudimentary at best.”

Silber

He was very very helpful, and I have not even bought anything from him yet! High marks from me all around!

He did mention they have an oversized valve and port option for the 3.2 heads that offers double digit flow improvements for a very reasonable price. If my budget wasn’t already at the limit, I would totally send my heads in for that.

Planning to update this thread through at least engine build, installation and tuning.

May take me a while to get it all done, so updates may not be terribly frequent, but I’ll make sure it gets captured as it happens.

Regards,

Silber

It seems like that took longer than normal. Was it a problem at LN or plating?

It was ready late December, but I missed the voice mail telling me so. Basically, delay is on me.

They had sent it to plating within a week of me dropping it off, so most of the time was spent there.

Ski season is in full swing, and work is crazy, probably won’t work on this project again till March or April.

Just checking in…

Life has interfered with my fun Boxster project, I’m hoping to get started on it again in the next month or two. I think I pretty much have all the parts I need it should be just a matter of labor at this point.
