Brake Problem Please Help

I recently purchased a 1999 Boxster with 45 K Miles. The brake pedal remains in the depressed position once I remove my foot from the pedal. This happens 70% of the time while stopping / slowing both on hills and level ground. I must use my foot to lift the pedal upto a non braking position before i can continue to accelerate.

Sounds like a possible bad Master cylinder.....but I would bring it in to a shop to be sure....I'm not an expert tho, but that is a symptom when your Master cylinder starts to go.....

It may well be the master cylinder, but have you checked for the obvious yet - anything blocking or binding on the pedal or return spring?
The pedal linkage on my 2001 is quite unique compared to any other car I've owned - it is an aluminum truss-style part (stong and weight-saving) with lots of openings that could hang up on something. A footmat or other item that could possibly have made its way up into that area could easily bind the assembly.

Grab a flashlight and take a peek up under the dash and you may find something obvious. While you're down there, check the ease/smoothness of depressing the pedal and something may come to light.

I'm also not an expert but it could possibly be some sort of malfunction or leak with the brake lines. When was the last time you flush the brakes? air may have entered. Just to be safe, bring it to your mechanic.
