Mobil 1 0W-40?
Any buddy have anything good or bad to say about this 'European' blend of Mobil-1? Says it is for Audi, Porsche, mercedes etc. Also fully synthetic. I am thinking of using it this year instead of my Castrol.

Not another oil thread! 
There is tons of info on this, please use the search feature.
There isn't anything wrong with Mobil 1, I was using it, but recently switched Castrol per the recommendation of some very knowledgeable people on this forum.

I'm pretty sure that this decal was paid for by Mobil at a cost of many times the price of the decal:
My 2001 owner's manual does not have ANY recommendation of a 0 weight oil:
0 weight Mobil1 oil? I put in in one of mine because it was on sale. Next 6 month change I think it's going to 10W-40 Castrol Edge, if the engine hasn't had a catastrophic failure by then. :dance:

LOL! Just noticed the designation on the container about being for Porsche and other German cars and wondered if this was something new I was missing. I also have the spin on filter from L&N and he recommends 5x 40.
Also nice to stir the pot from time to time.

Cue up my non-scientific Mobil rant:
Many years ago I used Mobil 1 exclusively. Then about the time that Exxon merged or bought out Mobil, I noticed that when I was pouring the oil into my BMW, the pour point seemed different, and the color had changed somewhat, though I was using the exact same viscosity type that I always had.
Then I read on Bob's the Oil Guy that Exxon Mobil had changed from using one class of synthetic type to another class. By "class" I am referring to something called a PAO class. As I recall, they had changed from a Class IV to a Class III.
I'm not sure if a Class III is really a bad oil, but the fact that this company changed their product without any other labeling change felt like a bait and switch to me. So, I will never ever use another Mobil product.
By the way, I use Red Line exclusively now.

A very common misconception is that the "W" stands for weight. That's not true. It stands for "Winter" and just means that the first number is the viscosity rating at 0 celsius. The second number is the viscosity rating at 100 degrees celsius (212 fahrenheit) which is generally operating temperature. So it's the second number that you're really concerned about. The biggest advantage of a low Winter number is quicker flow at startup.

My box runs with a synthetic 5W-50 engine oil into next season. Less sound from the hydros when cold starting. Also i didn't drive the car in winter time / season. So i think there is no need for a 0W oil for me.

According to the M96 experts ,our engine has some unusual characteristics that require an equally unusual oil specification for best results.The optimum Track and street choices are different
Three of the issues I recall are:
1. anti-foaming additives
2. high shear resistance
3. high thermal stability

Mobil 10W-40 High Mileage changed every 10 hrs of track time (of course, those 10hrs are almost all at/near redline and wide open throttle!).
I figure that any good quality oil that is changed often will probably do the job just fine regardless of brand or exact weight.

Anyone use the European formula or do you guys use the regular Mobil 1? I am trying to get oil for my first oil change and I am lost.
Is there a standard recommended filter that you guys use? I don't need the absolute best with a ridiculous price. I need to know what's a good budget friendly recommendation that's not garbage.

I'm pretty sure the 'European Formula' label is just a marketing thing, it's still Mobil 1 0W-40. It's worth mentioning that Mobil 1 is not what it used to be. You can read a ton about oil on this forum, but I switched to Castrol 10W-40 so you may want to look at that. I also switched to a spin on oil filter but I was previously using the Wix/NAPA Gold 7211 Oil Filter, which seems less prone to disintegrating on the ends than other paper filters.

Had to switch to JG 5W-40
rick3000; My car is draining the last of the Castrol Edge as I type. I had to switch so I am going to the Joe Gibbs oil. None of the Auto Parts stores around here can get the Castrol 10W-40. O'reilly's had 7 qts and said no longer available??? Figured if I was going to pay $9 + for the Castrol that I'd just go ahead and pay $10.00 for the JG.
IS this a Commiefornia thing?

I wasn't aware that it was becoming unavailable? It's still listed on the Castrol website. I bought some at Pep Boys last week for $6/qt (although it was in the back, not on the shelf), and Amazon has 6qts for $50, so about $8.50/quart.

Just changed mine I went to Motul Xcess 8100 5/40 seems a lot quieter on startup but that may be the new oil . I cut the filter up thankfully there was nothing in it metal or plastic
