Tube seal Installation Lube, what is it and why is it so pricey?

Anybody have a cost effective substitute?

Buy a tube of dielectric grease at you local auto parts store; same type of product for about $5.

Silicone grease from a pool company or similar ? Should be able to buy a small tub for a few bucks and it gets along with rubber o-rings.
