When you add the 1/4 of a bottle of synthetic at a time like spine911 said, give it about 5 minutes to drain all the way down to the pan before you re-check the level and add more. Synthetic oil is made to stay put and keep things lubed longer so it takes a bit for it to get through the curves in the filling system.
