I installed the 997 short shifter. It's pricey, but I love it. Not a difficult job at all.

I've had the schnell in my car for over 100,000 miles. Installation took a couple of hours, if I remember correctly. It's not as precise as the 997 kit, but not bad.

So would you go back to the original throw shifter if that was an option? I just felt the stock short throw in the 550 S se was really nice..My concern is with aftermarket shifters not being as good as original and having to put up the bucks for Porsche's stock short throw..

I put a B&M shifter in my Boxster and never regretted or considered going back to stock afterwards. Yes, it took a little more 'effort' (marginal) to shift but it eliminated the sloppy shifting thru butter melted for corn feel of the OEM.

My 997 has the std throw shifter and although I've contemplated going w/ the Porsche SSK (B&Ms and the like get very tight and "notchy" in 997s IMHO) I'll probably just keep sticking w/ stock.

That being said, a lot of people w/ 9x7s upgrade to the OEM SSK. As such, you can probably find a used 9x7 shifter out there in the housing for $150. This would probably give the best of what you are looking for.

Good luck

I put the Top Speed Pro-1 (forum sponsor) in my car and I LOVE it.
It's my favorite mod, low cost and high utility!
You're missing out on pleasure if you use the OEM shifter.
