Short throw shift..

Just bought my 1st Porsche! 2004 Boxster S blk/blk.. A dream come true at 51 yrs old..But while looking I drove a Boxster S 550 SE with short throw shift..amazing!..Anyone done the retrofit on their own?..I have Wayne's book, "101 Boxter projects"..It seems like it might be a long project with a lot of of crazy tolerance stuff that I might curse on my next S turn..Thanks..Looking forward to my new life..

Lots of info on it on this board and quite a few options. Search for it and you'll be busy for hours.

You need this upgrade for 15% reduction.

For 35% reduction you'll have to pony up more for this instead.

I bought one of the 997 shifters referred to above. I did the install in about 1.5 hours. I also installed the GT3 console delete kit.

There are pictures on the Pelican Board that show step by step how to do the install. No crazy measurements. Just mark the shift cables and put them in the same position when you replace the shifter "cassette" as referred to by Porsche.

It takes longer to remove the console that it does to change out the shifter assembly.

I installed the 997 short shifter. It's pricey, but I love it. Not a difficult job at all.

I've had the schnell in my car for over 100,000 miles. Installation took a couple of hours, if I remember correctly. It's not as precise as the 997 kit, but not bad.

So would you go back to the original throw shifter if that was an option? I just felt the stock short throw in the 550 S se was really nice..My concern is with aftermarket shifters not being as good as original and having to put up the bucks for Porsche's stock short throw..

I put a B&M shifter in my Boxster and never regretted or considered going back to stock afterwards. Yes, it took a little more 'effort' (marginal) to shift but it eliminated the sloppy shifting thru butter melted for corn feel of the OEM.

My 997 has the std throw shifter and although I've contemplated going w/ the Porsche SSK (B&Ms and the like get very tight and "notchy" in 997s IMHO) I'll probably just keep sticking w/ stock.

That being said, a lot of people w/ 9x7s upgrade to the OEM SSK. As such, you can probably find a used 9x7 shifter out there in the housing for $150. This would probably give the best of what you are looking for.

Good luck

I put the Top Speed Pro-1 (forum sponsor) in my car and I LOVE it.
It's my favorite mod, low cost and high utility!
You're missing out on pleasure if you use the OEM shifter.
