There are only 2 ways of getting the air box out intact (that I know of) 1. remove the intake or just loosen it on that side or 2. drop the engine an inch or two by loosening the front motor mount (4 bolts to the chassis) put a jack under the engine first (not a bottlenose or you will punch a hole in the case unless you put a block of wood in between) drop it down without disconnecting the coolant lines (same procedure for changing the front motor mount) and then you can remove the air box intact.

Yep - took it out complete, undid the left side intake and also a bit of the power steering system.

Sounds daunting, but really wasnt that big of a deal.
