Tore down my dead 3.2 engine today...

Tore down my old 3.2 986S engine...

The engine is (or was) as M96 3.2 from a 2001 986S... The engine died coming out of Turn 7 at putnam park in Indiana... after shifting to 3rd it blew going into big bear... I was towed off, and a tech from an unnamed dealer (NOT Porsche of Lexington) attempted to start the car in "flood mode" and it starting clanking...

Long story short, my car is now running 7.8 DME with a 3.6... another story for another day...

Anyways here are the photos from today's dismantling of my original engine... big thanks to my fellow Bluegrass Region PCA'ers, Brian W. from Porsche of Lexington, and of course Judd for lending us his warm garage...

All Thumbnails are clickable, and I guess they explain themselves... looks like cylinder 4 hydrolocked from a cylinder crack... which can be seen on the head side of it in three places on the third and fourth photos on row 4

I LOVE IT!
Excellent carnage you created there.. Its so radical that its hard to tell what happened first, I love those. I don't suspect hydro lock, just looks like a D chunk failure to me..

I'll buy the whole thing, I am trying to nab every failed engine we can find for investigation... I'll need as much info as possible on how the engine was driven, serviced and what occurred when it did fail.

These will make some nice trophies for my collection. PM me with the price.

The Drive 'em hard theory contradicts all the laws of physics that I was taught.

"Physics" may be complicated. I studied it for 6 years and still had only scratched the surface. I can say that there are many physical interactions that seem counter-intuitive on the surface.

Granted. But assuming that a driver does NOT lug an engine, I know of no way that running an engine under load towards the top of the range does not create more heat, friction, mechanical stress, and wear, than running an engine at a more moderate speed. This is why the manual tells you to change the oil more frequently under SEVERE conditions.

As I have said before, if the engineers who make these engines really believed that it was GOOD to be redlining and such, they would be encouraging it.

Clearly, they don't think this way.

Again, having said all that, people drive the way they drive and build their logic around that style, not the other way around.
