Tore down my dead 3.2 engine today...
Tore down my old 3.2 986S engine...
The engine is (or was) as M96 3.2 from a 2001 986S... The engine died coming out of Turn 7 at putnam park in Indiana... after shifting to 3rd it blew going into big bear... I was towed off, and a tech from an unnamed dealer (NOT Porsche of Lexington) attempted to start the car in "flood mode" and it starting clanking... Long story short, my car is now running 7.8 DME with a 3.6... another story for another day... Anyways here are the photos from today's dismantling of my original engine... big thanks to my fellow Bluegrass Region PCA'ers, Brian W. from Porsche of Lexington, and of course Judd for lending us his warm garage... All Thumbnails are clickable, and I guess they explain themselves... looks like cylinder 4 hydrolocked from a cylinder crack... which can be seen on the head side of it in three places on the third and fourth photos on row 4 http://thumbnails12.imagebam.com/239...c023932521.gif http://thumbnails14.imagebam.com/239...b723932528.gif http://thumbnails9.imagebam.com/2394/bdd29423932533.gif http://thumbnails16.imagebam.com/239...3a23932537.gif http://thumbnails9.imagebam.com/2394/3051dd23932543.gif http://thumbnails4.imagebam.com/2394/b6ea9823932549.gif http://thumbnails.imagebam.com/2394/7561d323932555.gif If anybody is interested in any of these parts... make me an offer... |

I LOVE IT!
Excellent carnage you created there.. Its so radical that its hard to tell what happened first, I love those. I don't suspect hydro lock, just looks like a D chunk failure to me.. I'll buy the whole thing, I am trying to nab every failed engine we can find for investigation... I'll need as much info as possible on how the engine was driven, serviced and what occurred when it did fail. These will make some nice trophies for my collection. PM me with the price. |
OUCH!!.... Seems to contradict the 'Drive 'Em HARD' philosophy though... Nice of Jake to make you an offer on your 'Boat Anchor' too!

The Drive 'em hard theory contradicts all the laws of physics that I was taught. :D |

Can you tell us about the 3.6?
|
sure... but I'm not going to go into depth on the swap until a later point... as there are still things to work out... and other things in the pipeline to be done...
Jake... i PM'ed you.... |
Cool pics! Sorry it happened to you EC. I hope your new rig gets sorted so you can get back out there. +1 on the preliminary D chunk theory.

Granted. But assuming that a driver does NOT lug an engine, I know of no way that running an engine under load towards the top of the range does not create more heat, friction, mechanical stress, and wear, than running an engine at a more moderate speed. This is why the manual tells you to change the oil more frequently under SEVERE conditions. As I have said before, if the engineers who make these engines really believed that it was GOOD to be redlining and such, they would be encouraging it. Clearly, they don't think this way. Again, having said all that, people drive the way they drive and build their logic around that style, not the other way around. Its all good. Hey, its your car, drive it how you want! :) |
Well the 3.6 is running, just not were I want it to yet...
Bruce... Once the car began to be tracked... I changed the oil after each event... and did ton's of other preventative maintenance... I would have tried to get the engine partly or entirely good willed from PCNA, but there was no way that would happen... my local dealer knew how I tracked it... and I would have had to remove ALOT of aftermarket stuff to get back to stock... e.g. I have a power steering fluid cooler mounted in my front bumper... there would be now way to explain that! |
Thanks for posting the photos. Scary looking stuff.
Good luck getting the new motor sorted. Funny that others said D-chunk failure, because I was thinking the same thing. Jake, or anyone: Are D-chunk failures spontaneous, temperature related, stress related, casting error, or something else? |
OK Jake, tell us..
how you start to "walk the cat back" when trying to figure out what happened here--in a 100 words or less:)?
To the untrained eye, there is so much damage here it looks like it would be hard to figure out what failed first--which prompts the question. The cylinder wall failure--and crack at the top end--if I'm looking at this right--makes me think that where this started. BTW, easyc, how did the plastic chain tensioner parts look on this and how many miles were there on the car when it failed. Thanks. |
