Wierd, Scary Noise...What is it?

Whenever I drive around, for the past few weeks now, I've been hearing a wierd noise come from (what sounds to be) behind the passenger seat. It almost sounds like someone put a ball back there and when I slow down or accelerate it rolls around and hits things (I know this clearly isn't the case, but it gives you an idea of what I am hearing.)

Anyone have any ideas? It kind of worries me. Car drives fine, but you know how these things go. Its a clunking noise one minute and a dead car the second!

If you push the clutch in (or put it in neutral) and coast, then hit the brakes, does it still make the sound? Or does it just make the sound when you accelerate and slow down using the engine, in gear?

Accell/decell torque on the engine with a bad motor mount could make some noise. If the clutch in/neutral test stops the noise, it would seem to be motor/driveline related.

If it still happens with the clutch in while hitting the brakes, you're likely looking at something in the suspension.

Ditto on this. Would be good to get the car up on a lift and check it out. I would not wait long.

Ok so here is an update on this...

It happens when the clutch is in, and I am in neutral. What kind of suspension problem could I be looking at?

My guess is a worn Front Engine Mount.
I've seen and heard plenty of those.

For me, the last noise I had behind the passenger seat was coming from a bad water pump

I did not know that!

Now, did you know that our Boxer engine is mounted backwards from the 911?
That's why 911s don't have Front, engine mount issues like we do.
