DIY is always the cheaper option, but many ppl are mechanically-challenged! I would rather pay $$$ for an expert to service my boxster vs. me trying to DIY and end up screwing up the car....

I look at it like getting a hair cut, we all can DIY but we pay $ to get it done... compared to the $100/hr a dealer charges, the $15 i paid for less than 10 minutes is equally expensive!!!

I had my 30K service done about two years ago (I now have 38,000 on the car) and I don't remember what it cost but I know for sure it was not anywhere near $1,300 or $1,500 because then I would remember it. I'll check my receipt and edit this post later.

These dealers are all over the place with their prices. When I lived in CA I had my car serviced by Rusnak in Westlake and they always surprised me with how reasonable service cost was. Now in NY I was going to Huntington Porsche and they are very expensive for everything. I needed a rear wheel baring replaced and I needed an oil change so I told them to do the oil change since they had the car there anyway. They marked me up $4/qt of oil, charged me $10/qt. when I can buy the same Mobil 1 0W-40 at Walmart for $5.97/qt. and the charged me $150 labor for the oil change. Now I do whatever I can myself which I enjoy anyway.

I was amazed last year when I was calling around to the local dealers in the area for a quote for the 30k mile service :

Dealer 1 $850
Dealer 2 $1499
Dealer 3 $1140
Dealer 4 $920
Dealer 5 $1000
Dealer 6 $672
Dealer 7 $1200

I also asked them each what that entailed and they all read back the same list.

Obviously I went with dealer #6, but I was amazed that dealer #2 wanted $1,500 for the exact same service !

I have prices back from two dealerships in my area one for $688 and the other for $851. The dealership that quoted $688 also said they would give me a loner car.

My 30K mile service cost

O.K. here's my update. I found my receipt for my 30,000 mile service. It was done at 30,104 miles on 1/27/05. I am now at 38,056 miles.

On my statement it says $632.50 for the 30,000 mile service. However, this is just the labor they are quoting. The parts are extra. The parts cost was another $327.25

The labor was for 5.50 hours @ $115/hr

So, I guess when you call some dealers will quote you the all in cost (parts & labor) while others are just quoting the labor for a 30,000 mile service.

Then they charged me separately for:

$ 18.10 Oil filter insert
$ 1.37 Alum seal crush ring
$ 84.50 Oil (10 qts @ 8.45/qt)
$ 68.72 Pollen filter
$109.92 for 6 spark plugs at $18.32/plug
$ 37.95 Air cleaner filter

Then I also had them do the Bi annual brake flush which was apparantly not included in the 30,000 mile service.
$ 86.25 Labor cost Bi annual brake flush
$ 22.44 Brake fluid

So my all in cost for the 30K service was $959.75

plus I paid another $108.69 all-in for the brake flush
