what is redline for different years/engines?

Hey!

I am looking at acquiring a Boxster for my next car. I have test driven a couple and noticed a difference in engine RPM redline. Is the engine redline for the 1997-1999 2.5 6600-6700 rpm? 2000+ 2.7 7200 rpm? 3.2 liter 7400 rpm? I was confused when I was in a 2000 Boxster with a 7200 redline on the tach, and had driven a 2001 Boxster that had a 7000 redline, but cut out about 6600 rpm (at least it looked like the red marks on the tach started at 7k)

7200 RPM should be the red line for all 2.7L and 3.2L boxster.

My owners manual for 02 doesn't directly give a speed. It does say not to pass the first red mark on the tachometer which is at 7200. The transmission diagrams show both the Base and the S stopping at 7200. My rev limitter kicks in at 7200.

I THINK the 2.5L boxster red line is 6800.

If you drove a 2001 Boxster that cut out at 6600 you drove a broken Boxster.

Congratulations on living in Knoxville - lots of Boxster friendly roads in and around town.

As far as I know you can't pass the first redmark really because the rev limiter prevents this. Found this out first-hand a couple times

Adam, you can't pass red line with the throttle - unfortunately you can pass it using the clutch and too low a gear. It was in this context that Porsche warns about the red line.

I have no problem hitting the rev limitter occaisonally. The worst thing that happens is that you react too slow and end up not getting full acceleration. So far I've proved the rev limitter works in Gears 1-5, hitting the rev limitter in gear 6 has proven difficult
