I would echo Smith's comments that a 987 base won't have trouble keeping up with a 986S, so you may want to consider that route. As far as the 987 vs. 986 I think in your heart, you already know the answer to that one.

Although it's become popular for people to recommend the '05 used, as an alternative to the '06, in actuality their numbers are dwindling. Checking pre-owned inventory on Porsche dealer lots within 100 miles of you, there's only 1 - 05 987S Tip (at Beverly Hills Porsche). There is an 06 987S ("used" with 603 miles) at Walter's.
