Caliper rebuilding question

I'm rebuilding my new s calipers and one of the pistons has it's coating chipped off. Should I find a replacement piston or just use it?

If it were me, I would use it. You may want to clean it up, and the bores also if they are rusted or pitted, with 1000 grit wet paper lubricated with brake fluid.

You should be good with that as San said, cleaning up should do wonders. I would have no problem running something like that.

Jaay - are these coming out of a brembo caliper or aftermarket?

Believe it or not but for performance (motorcycle) racing we only use phenolic made pistons (yes, plastic). Cuts the heat (cooler fluid) by more than half. If you track your car and the type of guy gaining those mil/secs with hard braking techniques... you might want to have a look in those. Although they are not popular within the 'general' population... phenolic pistons is what is being used on each and every MOTOGP prototypes. Heard once or more this is also what they fit F1s but I've never really bothered to confirm this.

Thanks for the info. I am going to look into them. I already ordered a metal piston. I don't track my car nor drive the brakes too hard. I just needed to get them working again. I am upgrading from my stock 99 brakes to the S brakes. There is really no reason why I am doing the upgrade except that I always wanted to.
