How to Ruin a Perfectly Good Tire

Toyo RA1, shaved to 4/32's and heat cycled when new.

Two weeks ago was entering the Turn 9 right-hand buttonhook waaaaay too hot at the AutoClub Speedway Roval and somehow I locked up the right front and flatspotted it. Not sure what happened to my good friend Mr. ABS? Guess he decided to sit out that session? Anyway, it did make a very nice "blup-blup-blup" noise afterwards.

Another $275 lesson learned...

Wow, that's the worst flat spot I have ever seen. Sorry for your loss.

I have had occasional minor lock-up when running Pagid RS-14 pads, which seem to have so much bite that they fool the ABS, or the ABS just can't react fast enough.

At least you didn't go into "ice mode".

I agree, that is a serious flat spot - sorry Buddy...

And as said, better a lock-up than the fun you get with the "ice mode" - this is why I now disconnect the ABS for dry race and only put it on for added insurance when we race in rain. I have had two "ice mode" adventures, and do not want another one!!!

Tom? Did you figure this out?

This happened to my cars 2 times this past year at track events. One car had a dead battery (we pushed started it) and the ABS needs a lot of AMPS to work properly, then another car had a damaged ABS sensor wire under the dash that was "buzzed" by the fabricator during the cage install and missed by me during the build

I was not able to figure out why the ABS did not engage in this instance. ABS wiring and sensors seem to be working fine, checked in shop and work fine out on the track. On the good side, it has not repeated either. Ghost in the machine (for now).

We had multiple failures of the pump back in the GrandAm Boxster 986 days. They would lose a channel. 996's did it too, but running 2:45 races with two pro drivers tends to stress things differently than amateurs (like us)

The key is: don't turn the power off in the car when you come back to the pits.. it clears the codes
