Looking at the site stats, it could be an issue that I had on my own site awhile back, getting killed by search/indexing bots/spiders. Right now it's showing Currently Active Users: 3293 (49 members and 3244 guests). I'd be surprised if there were that many people lurking on the site who have not logged in, so it's probably just getting killed by these processes that are going through every topic and member constantly.
