Chasing my tail, need help badly.

The top line is that I have a crank/no start.

I have a 2000 Boxster S.

The fuel pump is not running when I turn the Key on. I replaced the relays under the dash and back in the trunk. I also replaced the ignition switch. And the CPS sensor.

I did have a PO455 code last time she ran.

Too that end I replaced all the valves under the right front fender (all 3) and the purge valve under the left in take manifold.

I have inspected the SAI vacuum hoses and have not found an issue.

At this point I have no idea what to do and done for now throwing parts at the old girl.

My wife thinks that at age 70, I may of lost my clarity and should give up and have it hauled to a qualified mechanic.

However I live on the southern Washington state coast, ~120 miles from Portland and a little further to Seattle.

I need some kind advice ASAP

Luckyman, first you will have to disconnect your wife's speaker and then proceed with the troubleshooting procedure.. Please don't take me wrong as my wife always tells me that I am too old to keep working on cars..

Seriously, you mentioned that your engine cranks, does the rpm needle moves at all? If not, you may want to start by checking the crank position sensor, here, there are many very capable people that will provide you with helpful tips, you just need to be patient and start troubleshooting one step at the time. Not even sure now where to start trouble shooting

See below the parts I replaced trying to trouble shoot.

From where I am now, what do you folks think I should test in what order?

Long post on another thread detailing my no start circumstance... and some good avicce.

Me? I'm checking...

Do you have gas? Ys, I know it's obvious... but...

Is that CPS moving?

Are you CERTAIN you hear the fuel pump. I'm under the impression it won't be hitting the fuel rails until the car is running. And, how would you hear the pum if the car is trying to crank over? That'd be knida loud. Try to jump the fuel pump relay. Gotta have the delivery of fuel, and then...

Are you getting any spark?

There are methods described upon these pages that wwill lead yoou too a solution. Read. Ask. Good luck.

Fuel pump is out, get the sending unit as well and do both at the same time.

I am confident that I am NOT hearing the fuel pump unless I jump the pump relay. I did replace that relay. Also the two related relays back in the trunk.

I have a full tank of gas which will a PIA if it is the fuel pump.

I did replace the CPS.

As the car will run with the fuel relay jumped, the same method to empty the fuel tank.

I did replace the fuel tank sender last winter, did not change the pump itself at that time.

I have reviewed what is on the forum, however I will find yours Starter986.

I thought so as well, however I wondered if pump could be failing, IE not enough pressure.

Does the DME or something check for enough pressure.

The current to the relay under the dash is present!

When you turn the key on the fuel pump pressure pressurizes the fuel rail with fuel so the engine can be started.
So there is a Spec. for fuel pressure at the fuel rail with key on engine off.
There is also a fuel pressure Spec. for key on engine running.
Then there is a Spec. for fuel volume.
They are all listed in the Bentley book.
Checking Specs. is what should be done before removing and replacing parts.
That is part of proper diagnostics.
It also saves lots of time and money.

I doubt that the DME checks fuel pressure.
Most likely fuel pump faults are triggered by electrical failure.

Low fuel pressure would show up in other ways such as misfires or lean conditions seen by the O2 sensors.

I purchased the least expensive compression/fuel pressure kit from HB months back. I did try to hook it up to the Schrader valve recently, but it didn't conain the proper fittings.

I'm checking fuel pressure so infrequently (have never) I'm hoping you could make a HF recommendation for a kit that will work with the 986, and moderately is priced. Thanks!

I am going to enlist help to track voltage from the "in" side of the fuel pump relay and see if I can learn something.

This forum is full of great folks, I love the info laced with patience and kindness.

If your fuel pump is not running with key on.....
Simply use a volt meter and check for voltage at the fuel pump wire harness connection with the key on.
If you have voltage at the connection then the pump is the issue.
If no voltage then you have a wiring, relay,or other issue with the circuit.
Simple.....

Bentley EWD diagrams

I found that the book has 1998 or 2001 diagrams, I have an early 2000S. Which drawings should i read as I try to figure this out?

Yes the connection closes to the pump

Regarding the Fuel Pressure Tester.. if you have an Autozone nearby, you can 'borrow' the fuel pressure tester' and when you return it you will get your deposit back.. 😁

No current at the fuel tank

I tested at the plug at the top of the fuel tank. The Green wire was where I looked.

One time I required a fuel pressure tester for my 987CS and I rented a tester from Autozone that had the correct adapter, you leave the deposit and a refund as soon as you return the tool, you can't beat that.. :-)

PS: I also have a couple of tools that I never returned and ended owning them..
