I'm curious why this is "better" and if so why didn't Porsche include it in the original car

I have one of Ben's short shifters too and really like it. It feels quicker and more precise than OEM. Installing the short shifter isn't that all that difficult. See how I did it here: https://rx19jones.wixsite.com/projectboxster/projectboxster2

They offered it as a post-delivery dealer installed option.

You will understand why it is better when you drive a Boxster with a short shift kit. The stock shifter feels like it should be in a 1960's VW beetle.
