That looks like a stock shifter. I just installed a short in my ‘04 S & it’s completely worth it. Most short shifters I’ve seen have an aluminum body & my stock one had the same plastic body as yours does. I did have to take a dremel to the black plastic frame or mount in order to access reverse.

The difference is night & day. The distance your hand travels is about half what it was & for me at least gears are more defined (especially 3rd)

Which short shift kit did you install?

My 2004 S doesn’t shift very crisply, especially 3rd gear and I want to upgrade.

I installed one of Ben's ball bearing short shifters and really like it. Seems to make shifts quicker and more precise..

The exact shifter that I have doesn't appear to be available but this looks like his current version - https://www.uniwerksdesign.com/product/bens-porsche-996-986-short-shifter/

There are a lot of options. There are the cheap short shift kits from China that you can find on eBay and other places. I believe in the early days, Ben used to buy these and modify them. Ben sells kits to modify your shifter too. I ended up putting a 987 shifter in my 986 - which offers a slight reduction in throw.
